For many of us, the anticipation of relaxing in a vacation land far away is tempered by the knowledge that the lack of routine will also threaten all the discipline we’ve managed to establish. The awareness that you’re going to have to work much harder to get back into the swing of things when you come back to earth can make your time off less of a treat than you might have hoped. Staying in shape is especially difficult when on vacation, but with a little foresight and a strategy, you can return from your trip without having taken any steps backwards in your fitness routine.

The first thing you’ll have to accept is that your workout time won’t look the same as it does during the normal course of things. No, your favorite gym isn’t going to be around the corner; you also may not feel as safe jogging down the streets of your destination city as you do down the sidewalk at home. Still, as long as you remember that it’s completely possible to stay in shape on vacation, you may find that the change in routine is a breath of fresh air to your workout regimen – as long as you make sure to exercise when you can.
First, when you are making your plans, remember to check to see if your hotel has a gym or workout room. Many of them do, and if yours does, your ability to stick to many of your regular exercises will be assured.
Even if your accommodations don’t offer workout facilities, there are plenty of ways you can incorporate exercise into your vacation. One way is, ironically, to pack light. Instead of pulling several suitcases and requiring a baggage cart, try to limit your luggage to only what you can carry. By carrying your bag around with you and moving at a brisk pace, you can get a nice workout in by simply exploring your destination city.
Other exercise opportunities include biking, canoeing, hiking, horseback riding, and swimming. While it might be tempting to just sit by the water and soak up the sun, you’ll enjoy your vacation much more if you get out and experience the beautiful world God made. The activity will stimulate your appetite so that whatever you eat will taste better, and you’ll have many more photo ops to show all your friends back home how awesome your trip was.
Exercise is a gift that you can enjoy where ever you find yourself. Just take the effort to step out of your comfort zone, and you’ll find that your vacation is more thrilling that it ever would have been if you’d stayed in the hotel room watching cable.
